A closer look at the upcoming Sergeant Toby πŸ›³οΈ

Some of you already guessed it: this towboat has flanking rudders!

Sergeant Toby has two engines driving two propellers, with large rudders behind the propellers and smaller rudders in front. These flanking rudders can help the towboat steer better while the engine is in reverse.

In the meantime, we are also working on an accompanying environment for this vessel. Do you have an idea which one it is?

I think it's gonna be something like New Orleans with the Mississippi River, but it will be complete with a European version of the pushboat with config 2x3 for the European waters

Arne Schollaert

Yeah now I'm sure it's gonna be an american canal. Any possibility to have a 2x3 config for those that want the veerhaven for Rotterdam? Excited to try her!

Gibraltar Strait environment

Error in scenery detected in the Gibraltar Strait environment. Ground lighting (street lamps) are positioned in the sea. Could you fix this in the next update?

I wonder if those are placed procedurally since I don't think a dev that actively places those would miss that.

Great Lakes Maps and Vessels

I was wondering if there was a way that we could get a Great Lakes map? I think it would be nice for people that work or live on the Great Lakes if there was a map and a few vessels that actually sail on the Great Lakes. People could train on the ships. Boat nerds would love to have that and maybe people that work on them too.

If you have any questions on Great Lakes vessels, ports, lakes and rivers please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Thank you,

Steven

The great lakes would be a great additiong! I always wonder what's it like sailing on a ship like that, I would love one of the older models similar to the John G Munson.

More precise controls on keyboard with engine controls.

Could there be an option to control the increments of the engine rpm/pitch when pressing a key. Could there also be fine tuning for customizable delay between button presses for more precise commands.

Agree with another user, should be an option to run the ship Dead slow, slow, half, etc. and then an option to individually control pitch/rpm as it is now.

locks

Every time i trie to Moore in one of the Locks in the Antwerp map i keep passing trough the walls

There was a similar error in the Solent environment. The developers fixed it, and I hope they will do the same for this environment.

Not too sure if Doggerbanke gets permission for departure with a big hole in her stern 🀣

Inconsistencies in Mooring Simulation

Entry into the port of Istanbul via the North Channel with a 1.3-knot southbound current.
I intend to berth my vessel starboard side to the South Mole’s dolphin to enable crane operations.
I will approach the berth after clearing the vessel to port in the South Basin.
At this stage, I observe no inconsistencies with the current’s effectβ€”it pushes the vessel slightly, as expected, against the outer breakwater and southward during the turn.

When presenting the vessel to the berth at very low speed (with the current on the bow), I deploy an after spring line and a forward breast line.
At this point, with the engine stopped, I expect:

  • The current to slow the vessel and push it astern,

  • The lines to tighten and pull the ship alongside the quay.

However, inconsistencies arise:
The current does slow the vessel, but once the lines are deployed, the simulator seems to consider the ship already in positionβ€”it does not drift astern under the current’s effect, and both lines remain perpendicular.

Readings at this moment:

  • STW: 1.2–1.3 knots (appears correct),

  • SOG: 0.1 knots (would only be consistent if the ship were already secured alongside with both lines leading forward, but they are perpendicular),

  • Transverse speed: 0.5 knots at the bow, 0.6 knots at the stern (these values seem plausible, yet no transverse movement is visible).

  • Water depth: >3.5 m (no issue).

Additionally, I noted that the lines break under the current’s force aloneβ€”their MBL (Minimum Breaking Load) should be reviewed.

Finally, the SOG (Speed Over Ground) display lacks a sign indicator, making it impossible to determine whether the vessel is moving ahead or astern. A small detail I forgot to mention earlier: when I noted that SOG does not indicate direction (whether the ship is moving forward or backward), I was referring to the SOG in the conning display.

Would it be possible to modify this display by either:

  • Adding an arrow (as is done for STW), or

  • Using color coding (e.g., green for ahead, red for astern)?

Arne Schollaert

Great observation! Although I wouldn't really agree on the green for ahead and red for astern solution, I think those colours should remain reserved for starboard and port. I think the arrow or possible a - for reverse could be a solution.

Thank you thank you thank you!! I passed my exam!

Thanks to Nautishome I passed my exam!
I work on a tug of 10m and 13m on Waddenzee and Groningen area.
So different from Rotterdam / Waal and with 110m containership.
Practice at home does work very well!

Congratulations on passing your examπŸŽ‰

Thank you for sharing your experience with NAUTIS Home! We're delighted to hear that practicing at home helped you prepare successfully. Learning-by-simulation is one of the key goals of NAUTIS Home, so feedback like yours is incredibly valuable and helps us continue improving the experience for future students.

If you're willing, we'd love to learn a bit more about how you used NAUTIS Home during your studies. For example:

β€’ Which exercises or scenarios did you practice most?
β€’ How often did you train with the simulator?
β€’ What aspects of the exam did you feel NAUTIS Home helped you prepare for?
β€’ Were there any features or situations that you found particularly valuable?

If you are interested in sharing more details, please feel free to email to [email protected]. If not, that is also ok, no worries!:)

Congratulations again, and safe sailing!

Congratulations on your success. It’s an asset for Nautishome. This demonstrates the need to develop this simulator and/or educational tool as close to reality as possible.

chartkaart
